The SIKAP BUNDOK Sapot, My FB Page And My CP: Service Outside the Usual Circle

First-off, ‘Sapot’ is how we call our webpage: as in spider web? Pinoys should be able to get it right away.

We all know that the internet serves a lot of different purposes: good, bad, amoral, religious, irreligious, political, apolitical, and whatever. Anyway, the following is a narration of events that transpired. Involving the SB sapot, my CP (cellular phone, of course), and my personal FB page. I will not mention names, except for the trigger character who was not involved in the exchange at all, although those involved probably would not mind.

Sometime last month I received a call on my CP from an unknown number. As I was busy outside the house, I missed it. As is my practice, I sent a text message acknowledging the call and asking for identification.

The caller texted back, identified herself, and asked for directions for how to get in touch with the family of ‘Alfred.’ She said she just wanted to help his older brother, and she did not know how to get in touch with the family. She had no idea exactly where they were in Isla Verde. I did not ask what the problem was. Not my style.

Apparently, she searched (googled?) for information about Isla Verde, was directed to the SB website where my name and contact numbers were available. She called my CP.

Who is ‘Alfred?’ The boy, identified as being from Isla Verde, joined the local version of ‘The Voice Kids’ early July, 2016. Apparently also, she learned that the boy was a younger brother of the guy she wanted to help.

Now, I do not watch the show, and I did not know the family. I promised to ask around. So, I sent queries to island people whose numbers I know: an island ‘neighbor’ and FB friend, a long-time friend (also an FB friend) and former island resident, a for-hire-boat owner, the MV St. Paul operator, and another island neighbor (father of my remaining alalay when am in the island).

The FB friend and former resident had heard of Alfred but did not know the family. The hire-boat owner confirmed that the boy resided in the island but not in San Agustin Kanluran. He did not know where. The last to reply, the FB friend and neighbor, had good news. She knew where the family resided (Bgy. Palonpon, an upper island barangay),and she gave me the contact number of a teacher she knew from the area.

I texted the teacher. She replied, turns out that Alfred is her nephew. I explained the backgrounder of the search, gave her the inquirer’s CP number, and asked her to pass on the message to the family. Subsequently, she passed on the family’s CP number to me.

I texted the inquirer, gave her the contact numbers.

A texted query from me, a couple of days later, elicited the information that she had gotten in touch with the father, and that they were scheduled to meet in the mainland, Batangas City proper, that coming Saturday. She thanked me. The aunt also thanked me via SMS.

I never asked what the problem was. It is enough to know that, somehow, I helped, and that the SB website and my personal FB page were useful.

I sent SMS messages to the three people who replied, I informed them of the developments, and also thanked them for helping me to help somebody.

Case closed.

Reflections of a family hiking mountains together ….. with Sikap-Bundok Mountaineering Club

Mel and Jong: Station 5, Ka Tino’s ‘free civet coffee stop,’ Mt. Manabu Day Hike, April 09, 2016

by Melanie B. Duran, MD.

I am noticing developmental milestones of my daughters Alexis Duran and Tisha ….. their EQ , senses, and intuition are sharper, their endurance is stronger. These are things no school can teach, but only a mountain and mother nature can provide. It’s a win-win situation ….. Parenting strategy at its best, the way our native forefathers inculcated their children on what are the most important values ….. taking care of mother nature and mother nature providing for our needs.

I hope my kids will pass these on to my grandchildren through the guidance of Sikap-Bundok Mountaineering Club. The Club’s culture of “walang iwanan”, being conscious of each other’s safety and welfare, and not leaving garbage in the mountain are values my children and grandchildren will inherit.

Blessed Trinity School First Aid / Basic Life Support/ Evacuation

SUMMARY REPORT

A three-day class on First Aid, Basic Life Support, and Victim Evacuation was held at the Blessed Trinity School of Las Piñas City, from Friday, February 06 to Sunday, February 08, 2015.

The school is the only private school in this city which has successfully elevated 14 scouts to the rank of Eagles in a span of two years. In fact, it is the only private school in the city with active Eagle Scouts. In all these instances, the club has been instrumental in helping them reach the coveted rank by providing them with trainings (First Aid/ BLS, rappel), hiking (Mt. Batulao, Corregidor) and community service (Dueg) opportunities.

The stay-in session was part of the this year’s Advancement Camp for members of the school’s scouting community..

In attendance were Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and Senior Scouts, numbering 24 in all.

Prexy Rey F. Cuyugan, was the Chief Instructor. Associate Jerry A. Belarde, also a club-rated Chief Instructor in the subject, provided technical assistance, particularly at the practicum level. Also on hand to support was Eagle Scout Alejandre Edwin C. Ravago, now a college student.

Gian Carlo V. Bufi served as auxiliary.

Also on hand to act as ‘victims’ during the event simulations/practicaum were five Senior Scouts, Eagles all: Leah Española, Ma.Theresa Montenegro, Luis Vicente Montenegro, Alessandra Noelle C. Ravago, Ma. Victoria Reyes.

DUEG IV A SUCCESS

Despite several changes in schedule, Dueg IV proceeded without any hitch. It was a success.

As a backgrounder, the outreach was originally planned for mid-November, 2014. However, the prexy had to go on an unscheduled trip to the USA late September, and the activity was moved to January 25, 2015. The activity could not proceed without him for the simple reason that his van was needed to carry almost all the materials and supplies for the outreach.

Subsequent headcounts of prospective participants showed that moving the activity forward to January 18th would assure better participation. So, it was the 18th.

The prexy returned on the 7th.

And then it happened. President P-Noy declared a long, five-day holiday in the NCR to cover the visit of the Pope. This generated requests to move the activity to the 16th.  The school principal agreed, even if it was a regular school day for them.

Tuesday, 13th, the principal requested that the outreach be moved to the 15th. The teachers had to go to town for medical examinations on the 16th. The group only had to re-schedule the trek to Timangguyob Falls to early on the 16th.

The group left the Javier residence by 2215H on the 14th. Rey driving his van loaded with supplies, accompanied by Shiela and Brian. Belle drove her car, and Bong drove the car borrowed from Belle’s brother. The other participating members were distributed between the two cars. By 0330H of Thursday, the 15th, they were in San Clemente, in the residence of Dr. Ronaldo M. Toledo. Husband and wife Raul and Nida, together with Dori, arrived from Bataan soon after. There was very little chance to sleep. Last minute addition of items into the gift bags, and the chatting, made sure of that.
